On November 1941, violent riots took place in the city of hamlisky, ukraine. In the midst of violence, Fania And Sonia Bernstein were taken captive and weRe placed in the Jewish Ghetto. Based on the circumstances and immediate threat to the life of Jewish in the context of the persecution of Jews. Their faith was seemed inevitable.
Alexandra melnik, a local citizen of Ukraine, arrived at the doors of the ghetto in search of the Jewish mother and daughter.
Following their encounter inside the Ghetto, Alexandra decided she would risk her life in effort to save Fania and sonia, and took them under her wing, giving them shelter and protection within her flat inspite of her own family's financial hardships.
One year past, and the “Final solution” designed by the Nazi regime was put in motion.
Alexandra melnik and her children, amongst them viktor melnik, continued to give shelter and food the two Jewish women, placing their own life at risk due to the unprecedented hunt of those who aided the Jews in Europe.
Sonia would later state in her story that viktor and their other children had lead the two women into the woods in days of great risk, showing maturness and great courage.
As the war continued, followed by the horrors of the holocaust, the Melnik family facilitated the escape of Fania and Sonia Bernstein, followed by 20 other Jews, rescuing a total of 22 Jewish lives.
On 1989 Sonia and Fania Bernstein made Aiyah and claimed their birthright to live in Israel, they resided in beer Sheva.
for their undisputed courage, Alexandra melnik and her children, with viktor melnik amongst them, were given the “Righteus among the nations” title. The title was given to them on 1994, only after Alexandra’s death.
Alמ along the years, Viktor Melnik was given an Israeli citizenship and moved to Israel.
